Students are introduced to a variety of geometric shapes in grades K – 5. By fifth grade, students are expected to classify two-dimensional shapes based on their properties. In order to be successful with this task, students must have a clear understanding of each shape and its defining attributes. This lesson can be used to review the special quadrilaterals (i.e., rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezoid, and parallelogram), their defining attributes, and their cross-classifications. This lesson supports CCSS.5.G.B1 and CCSS.5.G.B2.
