This is one of my FAVORITE activities I have created. I would assign this Word List once a quarter. Students would collect words in the following 4 categories: spelling, descriptive words, new vocabulary, and quotes/interesting facts.
I would emphasize that words should be tailored to them, but not too easy and not too hard/obscure. They should be common words that they will need to know/spell frequently. If they spelled words wrong, wrote words that were way too easy for their level, or left anything blank, I took points off.
I would also tell them that this is NOT an assignment to be completed in one night, but should be worked on throughout the quarter. Periodically during class we would come across a word and I'd say "Ooh, this is a great descriptive word" and mention the list. Or say "I see a lot of people spelling Wednesday wrong. If you don't know how to spell it, add it to your Word List correctly." When we had silent reading time, I would instruct students to have their Word Lists on their desks, so if they came across a good word, they could write it down.
Print double sided. I would 3 hole punch and have kids keep it in the prongs of their folder or binder, so it was easier to keep track of.
