This question exploration asks: How is a Scientific Theory Different from a Law? And Why are some scientific theories modified?
Question Exploration Routine is an instructional methods that teachers can use to help a diverse student population understand a body of content information by carefully answering a critical question to arrive at a main idea answer. Students taught using the question exploration routine earned higher total test scores than did students taught using the lecture-discussion method.
Personally, I use the Question Exploration Routine to figure out what I want to say and how I want to say it. I keeps my "Sage on the Stage" time limited to what fits onto 2 pages. This product includes the completed question exploration guide, and the student guide blanked except for vocabulary, scaffolding questions, and graphics already filled in.
These Question Exploration Routines are classroom tested to help students with the following Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in Science. SWBAT:
SC.7.N.2.1 Identify an instance from the history of science in which scientific knowledge has changed when new evidence or new interpretations are encountered.
SC.7.N.3.1 Recognize and explain the difference between theories and laws and give several examples of scientific theories and the evidence that supports them.
SC.8.N.3.2 explain why theories may be modified but are rarely discarded
SWBAT explain what a scientific theory is, and differentiate between a scientific theory and law
SC.912.N.1.2: Describe and explain what characterizes science and its methods.
SC.912.N.1.3: Recognize that the strength or usefulness of a scientific claim is evaluated through scientific argumentation, which depends on critical and logical thinking, and the active consideration of alternative scientific explanations to explain the data presented.
SC.912.N.1.6: Describe how scientific inferences are drawn from scientific observations and provide examples from the content being studied.
SC.912.N.1.7: Recognize the role of creativity in constructing scientific questions, methods and explanations.
