Center Objective: Students will use library resources to answer a trivia question.

Materials included: set up instructions, Common Core Connections for 1st-3rd grades, connections to AASL Standards, full page center sign in color and black and white, center choice card in color and black and white, answer slips in 3 sizes, 48 questions in 2 sizes, 48 full page answers to display, answers with sources.

I made my original Question of the Week Library Center with the intention that students will use our library resources more frequently (not just when we do a full research project) and practice searching for very specific information.

This version was created for my younger students who were showing a lot of interest in the Question of the week but I knew would struggle to find answers in resources intended for older students. Answers to these “junior” questions can all be found in PebbleGo, an emergent-reader database with read-aloud feature. Answers can also be found in nonfiction books, print encyclopedias, and databases such as Kids InfoBits, Grolier, and Encyclopedia Britannica. The answer sheets list two electronic sources per question.

This center addresses the following Common Core Standards, as well as others:
✼ CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
✼ CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
