This product is designed as an informal assessment/activity for any whole or small group instruction (works well also for RTI/MTSS) focused on QUESTIONING as a reading comprehension strategy. The product includes an explanation/description of Before, During, and After Reading questions, along with the difference between LITERAL (within the text or "thin" questions) and INFERENTIAL (beyond the text or "thick" questions) questions and HOW TO RESPOND to the two types.
Page 1- a graphic organizer for readers to respond to text using the Questioning Comprehension Strategy. There is a space for BEFORE reading questions, DURING reading questions, and AFTER reading questions.
Page 2- 2-Way Sort for sorting questions from Part 1 (BDA Questions) into "Thin" or "Thick" questions. Sort also provides an explanation of both types to remind readers of what the 2 types of questions mean.
Page 3 & 4- Optional extension of the activity that includes partner or individual reading & responding (formulating BDA questions, determining which are literal and which are inferential questions, sharing questions with a partner/friend, answering another's questions, and using much evidence from text to support answers or conclusions.
This resource is a great tool to use when teaching the Questioning comprehension strategy, and is a great follow-up activity to guided reading, reading workshop, literacy centers, literature circles, shared reading, interactive comprehension journals or notebooks, and/or a great resource to share with parents and/or guardians!
