I used this original story as a drama lesson to help the students role play as their characters. I was the investigator and I asked the students questions, which they had to answer as their character. I assigned two students each to be one character. The rest of the class was the jury (they would later decide who was guilty). They had to support their answer with evidence from the text and inferences, and if they accused another character, they had to provide proof. The jury was given a specific time to ask questions of their own. I assessed them on how well they stayed in character and how well they provided evidence to support their answers. There was a bit of an issue with the students just creating their own evidence (often in direct opposition to the story), but we discussed it and they understood the distinction.
Feel free to use the story, and change the school name to your own school. The students loved seeing the name of their school in the story.
