Nurture Empathy in your Classroom with this Empathy packet. It contains 2 posters and 2 sets of bookmarks. One poster lists compassionate questions that urge students to consider the feelings of others. The second poster lists caring questions they can use to reach out to others.
Why is Emotional Literacy Important?
In order to develop social skills, children must first be able to read emotional cues in themselves and others. Once they can recognize, label, and understand their feelings, they can learn to calm themselves, control impulses, and self-advocate (ask for help or for a break). They can learn to interpret the cause of others’ emotions and the intent behind actions. Without these skills, children often interpret the behavior of others as intentionally hurtful and may act out in ways that lead to social isolation. Being able to sense and understand the feelings of others is an important prerequisite to building positive relationships.
