I decided that I needed to teach my 3rd graders more explicitly about the different types of questions they will encounter in reading. This covers: Main Idea, Context Clues, Author's Purpose, Figurative Language, Text Structure, Inferencing, Compare/Contrast, Chronological Order, Text Features and Text Sturctures.
If the students know what type of question they are being asked, then they should be able to perform better with answering AND asking their own higher level thinking questions.
This is a total of 10 slides which goes over these questions. Each slide also has some kind of activity for the students to do in pairs (cooperative learning such as Kagan, etc.)
I have to say it was a major hit with my kids and they were very engaged. This powerpoint can be used throughout the year as it has been made to fit whatever is being read at the moment. Also wonderful for higher grade levels.
