Having a hard time finding time to do math timings? This is a quick and easy routine you can teach your students. They can have it out and done in 5 minutes. This is my beginning of the year math fluency packet.
Students work on the following strategies -
Name the number
Make 10 (students name the number that would add together to get a total of 10)
Doubles plus one
Doubles minus one
Doubles plus two
Doubles minus two
The students always work with a partner. One student is the “teacher” and one student is the “student.” The “teacher” tells the student if they are naming the right number. If they are the student gets to cross that number off. If the student does not name the right number, the “teacher” tells them to "stop and check". I have found that number lines have been a really helpful reference for my first graders at the beginning of the year. Students do 1 or 2 rows and then put it away. It is meant as a quick routine for a quick practice of math fluency.
