I needed a way to have my students summarize a short story we had just read, incorporating the setting, characters, and main conflict. I also wanted to teach tone/mood... so we used our iPads with iMovie to create trailers about the story! This was such a quick and simple task, and the kids LOVED it. They had to pick the tone/mood for the trailer, one that made sense with the story, write their storyboard first, then find images that fit. It took a total of 30-45 minutes, and they produced a quality summary, including all the important elements! This product includes a quick set of directions you can post for the students to follow, as well as a grading rubric that makes the grading of this assignment quick and easy. It could be used to summarize basically anything: nonfiction, short story, novel, etc.! I had my students work in groups, but they could easily do this on their own as well.
