Address common core reading standards as you introduce your students to the historical art-form of quilting. This project increases understanding of information as students compare and contrast the quilt story with the art project. This project uses fabric and simple hand sewing to stitch a basic quilt block that is attached to yarn to create a necklace. Designed by teaching artist, Bailey Earith, this project was a big hit with girls and boys at the Children's Discovery Museum. Lesson includes a suggested reading list, common core standards, tier two vocabulary words, and suggestions for post reflection questions. Step-by-step photos and modifications for younger and Special Education students are included. No sewing or quilting knowledge is needed by teacher to present this lesson.
Allow 2 class periods to make the quilt square necklace plus time to read and reflect.
For the sake of time, I recommend creating stations with 1-2 assistants.
Appropriate for home schooled students.
