A short 1-page quiz designed to assess the skill of performing basic metric conversions using the linear method, also known as the staircase or King Henry Doesn’t Usually Drink Chocolate Milk method. The quiz includes 18 individual questions and is worth 20 points.

I use this document as #1 of 3 assessments that follow my PowerPoint presentation entitled PPT - The Metric System and Metric Conversions, as well as 2 reading/worksheets. Specifically, worksheet (A) introduces the linear method and provides practice problems, while worksheet (B) does the same for the conversion factor or unit factor method. Worksheet (C) reviews both methods at the same time for further practice. This product is part of a larger suite of metric conversion products. Links to these products are found below.

PPT - Metric System and Metric Conversions
Study Sheet - The SI System, Unit Conversions, Significant Figures
Worksheet - What is the Metric or SI System of Measurement?
Worksheet - Metric Conversions (A) Linear Method
Worksheet - Metric Conversions (B) Dimensional Analysis
Worksheet - Metric Conversions (C) Linear + Dimensional Analysis
Quiz - Metric Conversions (A) Linear Method
Quiz - Metric Conversions (B) Dimensional Analysis
Quiz - Metric Conversions (C) Linear + Dimensional Analysis

Product Contents:

Page 1 - Quiz:

- Question 1 asks students to write the most common metric prefixes in a linear table, which will be used in subsequent quiz questions (e.g. milli-, centi-, deci-, [base unit], deka-, hecto-, kilo-)

- Question 2 asks students to examine a series of metric conversions and predict how many spaces to move the decimal and in what direction to move it

- Question 3 asks students to perform a series of metric conversions by the linear method
