I created this quotations map to provide a simple yet complete process for writing or proof reading dialogue. The map is comprised of the following 5 steps: 1. The Speaker Tag 2. The quote 3. Capitalize 4. Punctuate the rest of the sentence. 5. Quotation pattern sentences are provided for comparison.
This map inlcudes directions for punctuation and capitalization for sentences containing a speaker tag at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of a quote.
Once introduced to the map and how to use it, students are able to use the map independently to write and or proofread dialogue. With repeated practice using the map, students internalize the process and no longer need the map to write quotations. The map activity works well for small group, partner, or independent practice.
