This assignment is helpful for getting studnets to think about characters/people in a meaningful way. In this activity, students research and choose 5 quotes that a character/person has said. They interpret them into their own words, identify a common theme, and then it leads to a whole class discussion.
This can be used for:
- Students studying specific characters in a novel
- Studying a specific historical figure
- Studying the founder of a movement/religion and how their words help us understand their philosophy (this is how I used it and kids really liked it)
- Many more possibilities!
You can also prepare a list of quotes for studnets to use for the assignment. I used the quote interpreting sheet to introduce Confucianism. Studnets read through a list of Confucius quotes and then did this activity. They really enjoyed it!
