Students practice integrating specific examples (quoting from the text) by creating three quote sandwiches based on "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" by Walt Whitman. This guide gives them a thesis statement and three areas of analysis (pastoral imagery, symbolism and parallelism) to focus their close reading and selection of text. They will find the best examples in the poem and write the actual quote sandwiches on this handout. You could make it more challenging by having them come up with their own observation areas to support the given thesis statement. Supplementary material to go along with this unit also available.
