Product Description
In this practice activity, students will have the opportunity to simplify ten algebraic expressions using the quotient rule for exponents. Expressions will be simplified in four ways – 1) all variables in the numerator, 2) all variables in the denominator, 3) all exponents positive, and 4) all exponents negative.

This activity consists of fifty spaces over two pages. Each space contains either one of the ten original algebraic expressions to simplify OR the simplified equivalent answer to each expression. Each expression has been simplified with all variables in the numerator, all variables in the denominator, all exponents positive and all exponents negative for a total of fifty expressions. Students are to match the original (not simplified) expression with the four equivalent, simplified expressions.

We have included two versions of this activity with student instruction sheets for each. In version one “Quotient Rule for Exponents with Key Problems” (the easier activity), we have included a KEY drawing next to each original, not simplified expression. This will help students know immediately which expressions NEED to be simplified. In the second version “Quotient Rule for Exponents with Problem Groups” (more challenging), there are no KEY drawings so students will have to determine which expressions go together and form groups of five (the original expression and the four equivalent expressions).

Students can use crayons, markers, etc. to identify the expressions that go together. We have included a color answer key for version one so students may check themselves. We HAVE NOT included an answer key for version two since students will be assigning their own color choices to groups.
