I used these resources in my 9th grade Honors English class to distinguish the difference between paraphrasing and summarizing and had great success. It improved my students' essay writing skills.

-Bookmark size and full size notes on "how to" and "purpose" for quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
-A scaffolding exercise using a familiar fairy tale to build students' skills and confidence level.
-Two articles for students to read and practice summarizing and paraphrasing.
-Student example of the articles summarized and paraphrased.
Takes 1-2 class periods to complete this lesson, depending on your decision to use only one or both practice articles.
A suggestion is to assign one article to be completed in class and the second article to be completed as homework.
