PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a compact one-day lesson to teach students how to quote poetry correctly in their writing assignments. I use this lesson in my AP Lit & Comp course, but I think it is effective on many levels. The lesson covers four common rules for how to quote correctly (use of quotation marks, embedding short quotes, how to quote over multiple lines, quoting longer sections). It includes an example for each rule and a culminating activity that enables students to apply the rules to a new poem.

I've used this lesson in my own class and it clarifies for my students how to quote effectively in their essays. Our preparation for the AP Poetry Essay is extensive and this is a nice one-day lesson that can be a whole class (50 minutes) lesson, reading the example poem "Fifteen", teaching the rules, and finally doing the activity in class, individually or in partners. The activity can also be assigned as homework.
