This set of r-controlled vowel read and write the room centers includes differentiated sets of cards for ar, or, er, ur, and ir spelling patterns. The first set of cards for each r-controlled vowel includes pictures and written words for students to decode and copy. The second set has dashes in place of the r-controlled vowel needed to spell each word. Students must look at each picture, segment the word, determine the r-controlled vowel needed, and write the full word.
In all sets, corresponding pictures give meaning to the words as students write them. This makes them great vocabulary builders for all students, and especially for those learning English as a second language.
Recording sheet options for each r-controlled vowel as well as mixed practice options are also included with and without handwriting lines. Choose those that best meet the needs of your students.
These cards can be used in a variety of ways. In my own second grade classroom, I use them during my small group center rotations at the beginning of the week, when the weekly phonics and spelling skill is still new. I tape the cards around the classroom, give each student in the center group a clipboard, and send them on a scavenger hunt to find and write each word on their recording sheets. There is also space at the bottom of each recording sheet for students to practice writing a sentence using two of the words. This activity could also be done as a whole-class scoot game.
