This card set was created for those students who have a very hard time producing a “strong /r/” sound. I find that retroflex /r/ is easier to learn, but the students need lots of practice before they can move to phrase level! I love using the Karla technique (paired stimulation approach by Julia Watt http://www.speakingofspeech.info/ArticR/R-PairedstimulationKARLA.pdf ). The strategy helps develop the tongue curling and backwards movement needed to produce /r/. This card set helps them practice the /arla/ tongue movement repeatedly without getting tedious.
Ideas for usage: print pages 3 and 4 on cardstock and laminate. Use to play matching/memory games, hide and seek, in drill practice, pair with any other game, etc. Print pages 5 and 6 on cardstock and laminate. Use for simple drill game: Place cards face down in a stack. Players take turns drawing a card and saying the name, “Karla.” The player who finds the “garlic” card loses or wins depending on your preference.
Contents: 1 page containing 9 different cards with /ar/ + /l/ sound to establish the needed tongue movement for a strong retroflex /r/. 1 page with repeated card for drill practice games.
