Teaching students how to write is tough! I’ve attended several professional development sessions, and I have learned so much, but it wasn’t until last year when I moved from 1st grade to 6th grade that I realized the struggle is real! I finally saw growth in my students’ writing when I introduced a 1st grade song to my 6th grade students. I am well into the 3rd nine weeks of my second year in 6th grade, and to this day, if I say, “BCR”, my kids start singing, “My BCR, ...” to the tune of “YMCA”. Standardized tests aren’t going away, but with this mini lesson, I know your students will be successful when they are asked to write a short or extended response ...so go forth, and TEACH!
