I taught my students to use the RACER Strategy to respond to an open-ended question. Their writing and answers improved SO MUCH! I no longer get short, one sentence answers. This strategy reminds students to answer questions completely and cite evidence and examples from the text.
I’ve seen similar strategies (RACE), but I found this strategy and explanation the most helpful for students:
R – Restate the question to create a topic sentence
A – Answer the question completely
C – Cite evidence from the text to support your answer
E – elaborate/explain the evidence
R – restate the answer to create a closing sentence OR relate the answer to something in your own life
I’ve created these bookmarks for students to keep in school to remind them of the RACER strategy and how to use it to respond to open-ended responses. I printed the bookmarks on cardstock and laminated them to make sure they lasted throughout the school year!
