Students should use the acronym “RACER” to fully answer open-ended reading questions. If they follow this "formula" they will have a better chance of earning a high score for the response. This will help students clearly demonstrates an understanding of the task, complete all requirements, and provide an insightful explanation or opinion of the text, or extend aspects of the text. I included possible wording for the extension at the end of the written response. My students have used this acronym when taking the weekly reading test (answering the written response questions) and when taking the state test to answer the text dependent constructed-response items in Reading. RESTATE, ANSWER, CITE, EXPLAIN, REFLECT.
