This RAFT writing assignment is the perfect follow-up to a lesson on African independence and the Pan-African movement. It can be assigned as in-class work, homework, or used with a sub. If you are looking for a longer project, this would be a great starting point and give students the chance to edit, revise, and publish their work in the Social Studies classroom.
Students will take on the role of either
-a diamond miner
-a former soldier
-a leader of the Pan-African movement
-a British colonist
and argue why their country deserves independence from Europe in one of the given formats. This activity allows for differentiated instruction and also incorporates the upper levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.
