This is a strategy that links a topic or concept with writing. The acronym RAFT: stands for Role, Audience, Format, Topic.
Role--you give them a role to take on while they write (reporter, salesman, scientist, character from a book, etc.)
Audience--who are they writing for? a 3rd grade class, parents, government, self, another character in a book)
Format: will they write a letter, song, journal, newspaper article, etc.
Topic--they need a topic to write about, usually related to what learning or reading about. This example shows one I used in my solar system unit. It includes the RAFT, the research they needed to find out about the planet they chose or were given, and rubric. It also includes a sample of a RAFT I wrote about the planet Earth. They LOVED this! I use RAFTS for many different subjects and topics. It really gets them into learning and writing.
