Want to assess your students’ writing ability and content knowledge at once? Want to try something different and fun? Want to engage your students with something interesting? Try a RAFT (ROLE. AUDIENCE. FORMAT. TOPIC.)! These social studies content area assessments are a great way to get your students thinking about history from different perspectives. They encourage students to think outside the box and apply their content understanding in different ways.
This Exploration and Colonization package comes with 8 different RAFTS and 3 teacher models that you can share with your students. These non-perfect examples will help get students thinking about ways to respond, but they won’t give away the big ideas or intimidate them. After seeing these simple examples, your students will feel confident and capable of reproducing the RAFT.
These prompts are great for all ages! The only difference will be the quality of the finished product.
These RAFTs focus on the Exploration and Colonization of the Americas. They focus on diseases, technology, indentured servants, explorers, royalty and more.
I provide partners with two and have them choose one or give an individual three to choose from. The variety keeps students intrigued and sharing back your results is always fun.
