Want to assess your students’ writing ability and content knowledge at once? Want to try something different and fun? Want to engage your students with something interesting? Try a RAFT (ROLE. AUDIENCE. FORMAT. TOPIC.)! These social studies content area assessments are a great way to get your students thinking about history from different perspectives. They encourage students to think outside the box and apply their content understanding in different ways.
This World War II package comes with 8 different RAFTS. Each writing prompt requires deep content knowledge. Students would need to have a basic understanding of the following concepts:
Battle of Stalingrad
Battle of the Bulge
These RAFTs are designed with older students in mind. They can be given to strong middle school students, but since excelling at the activity requires content knowledge and an understanding of perspective, they can difficult. I have given them to Middle School aged students, but I always have to scale back my expectations a bit, or scaffold with discussion and a group write.
