The RAW Reading Program is a reading-encouragement program with a technology component. Students record weekly reading on a log, and use the number of pages read to represent miles traveled. Throughout the year, students track their “distance traveled,” and use Word, Excel, Google Earth, and Google Distance Calculator to create a travel diary of their travels. Students will use Google Distance Calculator to locate the cities to which they travel, based on miles read. Their travel diary table will include photos, gathered using Google Earth, from those cities.
This lesson is not within my Level-based Curriculum Progression, but should be used after much of the level 4 work has been completed. It is also recommended that students have completed Intro to Google Earth (lesson 5.13) and Intro to Google Distance Calculator (lesson 5.14).
Recommended for Fifth and Sixth Grade.
Uses Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, but can be adapted to any word-processing or spreadsheet program.
