This Grade 1 assessment is designed to accompany the REACH for Reading program by National Geographic. It is meant to be an assessment to see which High Frequency Words (HFW) the students know at the beginning (fall), middle (winter), and end (spring) of the year. The assessment has all 192 words that are found from the units 1-8 in the manual. There are two documents to use each assessment period: a teacher copy and a student copy.
Assessments are designed to be given one-on-one. This is not meant to be a timed assessment but if the student does not know the word automatically, simply direct them to the next word. Often in first grade, there are a few students who do not know many words. Simply ask them to pick out words that they know, especially for the fall assessment. It is amazing the progress that students make over the year and this is a wonderful way to tangibly see and celebrate that growth!
