This R.E.A.D. interactive checklist is an awesome tool for students to see what they have to have in order to get a “4” or in my state, “Meets with Excellence” on their constructed responses. Due to the rigor of common core standards, students need to provide text evidence with their answers. This checklist will help students with this because they are able to refer back to their checklist to check if they met the requirements. In addition, this will remind students to use R.E.A.D. when answering constructed response type questions.

This is an excellent way for students to self-assess themselves and have a visual helper to guide them in their writing. In addition, I use this checklist to conference with students on their constructive responses. It really helps students focus on what they need to do for each part. Most importantly,I have my students use this when they are taking their Reading Wonders weekly assessment. At the end of each weekly assessment, there is a constructed response question and they use the checklist to double check if they included all parts. It has been very beneficial! Even though I use this checklist with my second graders, it could definitely be used for first, third and even fourth.

Before setting up the R.E.A.D. checklist, make sure to laminate with a 5 mil or 10 mil film. This will ensure durability. I like to cut and glue my sheets onto a manila folder and then run it through the laminator for extra durability. Also, all of my tags are laminated with a 10 mil film so it can withstand the constant touching/lifting by students when they are working on their writing/self-assessment. I get my tags printed at Office Max and I have been happy with the outcome. It’s a little pricey but I plan to use these for a very long time and I think it’s worth it. I have my students place their R.E.A.D. checklist in their writing folder.
