This Readers` Companion accompanies the novel The Picture Of Dorian Gray Penguin Readers Level 4. So it is not suited for the original version of the novel.
The document includes an Introductory task, so students can become familiar with the author, the main themes explored in the novel, the context of the novel and the features of Gothic literature. The Companion contains 8 Reading Journals and a final reinvestment task.
The reading journals include reading comprehension questions. Each journal has a pre-reading, while-reading and after-reading section. The journals combine reading comprehension with oral and writing activities.
Each journal explores a specific theme and the after reading activities (oral or writing) help students to connect with the text and express their opinion on specific questions related to the novel, but, at the same time, students also have a chance to go beyond what they have read in the chapters (connect with the text).
The journals also contain questions that make students interpret and analyze quotes to develop their critical skills.
The document is designed according to the requirements of a learning and evaluation situation (Quebec`s ESL program). The document develops the three competencies of the ESL program: oral interaction, reading comprehension & reinvestment of understanding of texts as well as writing.
At the end of the document, there is a complex task that evaluates students` competency of reinvestment of understanding in a written production.
The document is for intermediate to upper-intermediate ESL students, however, some activities are more challenging, so the work can be used in mixed ability classrooms as well.
You can spend months on reading the novel, it depends on how much your students read during class.
