Do you ever get tired and/ or overwhelmed with the thought of formulating reading response questions for the endless number of ‘fiction’ books your students are reading each year? I certainly did.
Do the students you are working alongside, cringe at the thought of answering questions about a book? Mine certainly have.
To try and combat these two issues, I decided to design reading response questions that contain the following elements;
A. Generic structure– open ended for ALL fiction books
B. Diverse topics– Who, What, Where, When, Why and How questions explore setting, character, plot, author, illustrator, audience and self
C. Demand thought– the question types are designed to target 3 levels of comprehension; ‘on the line’ (literal), ‘between the line’ (inferential) and ‘beyond the line’ (evaluative) understanding
D. Creative– graphic design and layout grabs the readers’ attention; plus many of the questions seek a unique perspective
E. Boy friendly– the outer space title and theme is a positive lure that many boys relate to; It helps break down the initial barriers to an otherwise ‘perceived’ boring task
Question Blaster: Launch Kits 1, 2, 3 & 4 are the exciting out-workings of this design challenge.
a. 102x cards, each containing a different question. They are color coded into 6 sets based on their question type (Who, What When, Where, Why and How).
b. 4 class sets of different Student Workbook Editions. These booklets are the perfect option if you are looking for a ‘one stop place’ to record all the answers in a easy to find, neat and organized format. Pages have also been dedicated for students to generate their own questions. Finally, a ‘Progress Tracker’ page for monitoring performance outcomes, has been included in each booklet edition.
c. 8 different Progress Tracker Posters. These awesome evaluative tools are in large and small poster format. There are 4 designs for whole class use and another 4 for individual student recording. The rocket & stars maintain the cosmic theme.
