In all of my first year undergraduate classes I assign Infographics as a way to engage my students in the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. I always find this assignment rewarding for my students. It offers a helpful way to study, a different type of assignment, a way to engage visual learners, and I am usually surprised by their work. I sometimes have them work in groups of two.
While you may use this rubric and examples with any novel or text, you could have your students create an Infographic on the play Inherit the Wind and use my examples from the Scopes Trial as both a model and an introduction to this famous case.
In order for your students to excel in this activity, they need to see examples and understand how they will be graded. Provided here is a rubric and 10 examples from my own classes.
Included in this unit are the following:
➢ A rubric that shows students what is expected in their finished product. It provides a colorful guide in the form of an Infographic created from Easelly.
➢ Same guide in a black and white printable format.
➢ Instructions for students as a PDF and in an interactive format on Google Slides.
➢ Instructions that I give my own students - in a partially editable format.
➢ Instructions for teachers.
➢ Tips for students and teachers.
➢ Student examples - I use student examples from previous semesters to help my class understand my expectations. There are 10 included here from first and second year University students and an example of a citation page. Six are from the Scopes Trial and the other four are from the Brown v. Board of Education and the Massie Trials.

My DAILY DILEMMAS work well as last-minute sub plans or stand-alone lessons, but they are also an excellent supplement to any class focusing on ethics, law, justice, argumentative writing, and debate. This one has a GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE component.
INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT ARE THE FOLLOWING:
✔ A ONE SHEET DAILY DILEMMA. Traditionally one sheets are single page documents that summarize a person’s accomplishments, or advertise a product or a film. They are sometimes used to introduce new artists and/or films. They usually contain an image or two, biographical information, and taglines. I have created these DAILY DILEMMA ONE SHEETS to help students engage in critical reasoning and to introduce them to philosophy, ethics, law, and justice. They may be used as homework or class work, individual or group work, and even as seminar or debate preparation.
✔ An example of a student answer and two Infographics that students created after working on the Dilemma One Sheet.
✔ An extra page of additional information for students with excerpts from the trial.
✔ Teacher notes – these are presented in the same one sheet format so they are equivalent to four pages of notes. You could use the teacher notes as part of an overhead presentation.
✔ Links to online sites for further research including links to relevant court cases, current articles on the Scopes Trial, hate speech on campuses today, fake news and the First Amendment, and more.
✔ There are an additional five questions with relevant links.
✔ Interactive version where students can type in their answers on their computer. The One Sheet and the additional extra page of trial transcripts is also online.
