Self-assessment is what common core standards are all about! A student needs to understand what they know and what they don't know. This knowledge helps the student to set goals for his/herself. A reading log is the first step into developing a reading life. Through the reading log a student can be taught to self monitor. How many pages am I reading in 30 minutes? Why? Is the text too hard or too easy? Am I reading different genres or am I only reading fiction? Am I jumping from book to book or am I thoughtfully finishing one text before jumping to another? With proper instruction, a reading log can be a wonderful self-assessment tool.
