The Independent Reading Menu Project is an engaging and rigorous summative assessment folio that gives your students the opportunity to showcase their effective reading, comprehension and analytical skills.
Best used after running our INDEPENDENT READING SKILL BUILDER program, the Menu Project works with any novel and engages students with a creative alternative to the dull and outdated book report. Students choose their own activities from a ‘menu’ of diverse tasks, culminating in choosing one of the following ‘main courses’ based on their novel:
1. a transformative creative narrative
2. a critical review
3. a persuasive speech
Each main course is carefully scaffolded and actively facilitates self- and peer-editing with specially designed rubrics and graphic organisers.
This assessment will see your students engaging with their novels and the skills of effective readers at a deeper level, progressively operating within Bloom’s higher order thinking skills and modelling authentic assessment as, for and of learning. Based on timetable of five 45-minute classes per week, and making adjustments for homework expectations, this assessment is anywhere from a 2 to 4 week project.
