If you expect your students to create reading responses, YOU NEED THIS RESOURCE!
This is the most unique resource on the web for teaching READING RESPONSE. This unit teaches students to think in abstract terms and use a CRITICAL approach to text. Through a process called 'trans-mediation' students learn how to respond to texts using different media: photograph, art, music, abstract association. The net result is much more deeply sophisticated reading responses and levels of critical thinking.
The unit begins by encouraging students to use their handheld phones to take photos of areas around school or home that might be representative of bigger ideas. This approach then gets applied to social issues, chapters in stories, characters, or whole novels. e.g. What might be a good photograph to represent an idea in your text? Because students are so engaged they begin talking about the texts in such a more sophisticated way. This explanation just touches the surface of the activities in the unit. Students are taught specific photograph, art, and music techniques in the unit: rule of thirds, leading lines etc. In addition, students are also taught how artists and musicians create meaning in their media e.g. the symbolic representation of color, lines, shapes melody and timbre etc. As this approach crosses multiple domains, all students will find a way to express their thinking whether be thought art, sculpture, or music that ALWAYS results in deeply levels of thinking.
THE PREVIEW ATTACHED TO TPT DOES NOT DO THIS RESOURCE JUSTICE! I HAD TO DELETE ALL THE BEST VISUALS AS THE IMAGES MADE THE FILE SIZE TOO LARGE FOR A PREVIEW
Sample examples of student work, painting, responses to text using photos, and videos are included as samples of how students can talk about their independent reading book, partner book, or book club novel etc. I GUARANTEE the levels of thinking will improve through the use of this resource. The unit is SO MUCH FUN that students won't even realize that the work they are creating is a READING RESPONSE. Perfect for classrooms following the Reader's and Writer's workshop methodology or any other classroom that expects students to find deeper meaning in text.
This is a PERFECT COMPLIMENT to my best selling unit 'Notice and Note.'
Notice and Note
That unit not only introduces the 'notice and note signposts' in an engaging way, it also shows students a many continuums of levels of thinking for claims, evidence, and interpretation. I have included a bonus lesson in this unit on 'text interpretation' that shows students how to judge and critique characters and events in stories.
If you want a series of worksheets, then go buy something different! This resource TEACHES students to THINK. A number of short stories are also included as mentor texts that students can use to practice with. Teacher produced samples make lesson delivery full of examples and suggestions. For $8.50 these 75 powerpoint slides are a STEAL. The unit is supposed to fit with any text being read to students or any reading material happening already in the class. Teachers are encouraged to tweak the unit in a way to fit his/her needs.
I state may reputation as a 25 year veteran educator, that this unit will truly make a difference in the way that your students discuss texts.
