READINGOPOLY: An Alternative Reading Log Program

Are you looking for a program that gets students excited about reading? Are you tired of chasing students down to get them to complete a reading log? Do you want to be able to differentiate what the students are reading but still provide student choice? Are you looking for an engaging summer reading program? READINGOPOLY may be for you!

READINGOPOLY is not really a game – it is a reading “program.” I was inspired by the lack of quality reading logs I got from students – and how much of a drag it was to keep up with reading logs with my own child. I noticed that my students that were avid readers frequently didn’t complete reading logs, and the non-readers turned in a lot of garbage. Seriously, just garbage.

This program’s goal is to get kids excited about reading. As kids land on different spaces, they select a book in that genre. It allows students to have a lot of choice in what they read, but the teacher can make sure that each student selects books on his or her reading level.

Students are not competing with each other, they are just completing their own board. Each board space is a different genre. As students complete a board space, they earn the matching sticker to put on their personal board. This is how they can keep track of which spaces they completed. (If you have ever collected these little stickers from the fast food restaurant, you will know how much kids like to collect them! My kids used to beg me to go there just to get the stickers.)

Once students complete an entire color set on the board, students earn the matching brag tag. Teachers can add another prize if they like, but kids really like to collect these tags and show them off to people.

I have created a set of basic rules, but teachers can modify the game to suit their needs. Teachers can add prizes for different board spaces. Teachers could also allow some students to do a traditional reading log while other play READINGOPOLY. As students are playing the "game" individually, the rules can be easily changed.

This file includes:

1. templates for individual game boards to store in notebooks or binders.
2. templates to make a wall-sized game board.
3. 2 sets of cards - one for "fun" and the other set has language arts review questions.
4. templates to print stickers to match the individual game board spaces.
5. templates for brag tags.
6. editable playing pieces.
7. reading log templates.
8. book review template.
