This is an authentic piece of cultural realia used in class when we practice giving and asking for directions.
Antigua, Guatemala is a beautiful colonial town known for its massive amounts of cathedrals and churches in such a small area. When practicing giving and asking for directions around a city, we simulate the very real-world task of arriving at the bus station (located on the map) and then asking to get to a specific cathedral.
Sometimes I assign students the Cathedrals to visit, other times they have a list, and I have even had students investigate which of the cathedrals they wanted to see a head of time.
This prompts a great cultural conversation about the history of the city and the impact on the Spanish conquest and the expansion of religion around Latin America.
