In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to learn about the Reconstruction Era and the challenges the country faced during a time of healing for the country after the UNITED States Civil War.
The first phase of the lesson involves students brainstorming, debating and discussing how to treat southern states after the war through a survey and "four corner" debate.
The next phase of the lesson allows students to read about the actions of President Johnson and Radial Republicans in newspaper format. After students have identified the actions of both, they will try and organize the information in order to tell the story as if it were a boxing match.
Reconstruction "Boxing Match" Part 2 (Power Point) can be purchased and used as a follow up to Part 1 allowing the teacher to clarify content while students discover how close they came to how the information was organized.
