Character Education is a major part of my guidance curriculum each year. Teaching the character traits to kids is so vital to their long-term growth and success.
This is a WORKSHEET that goes with the guidance / character ed lesson about RESPONSIBILITY.
The lesson is based on the book, "Horton Hatches the Egg'' by Dr. Seuss. In the story, Horton accepts responsibility for the care and nurturing of an egg that is left by its mother who goes off to enjoy the warm weather and play. Horton endures countless hardships to assure the safety of the egg. He shows great responsibility.
Using this presentation for your guidance lesson, you can easily help students to understand a variety of concepts related to character education. This lesson teaches:
The definition of RESPONSIBILITY;
How it applies to various aspects of our lives;
How it can be observed in our trusted adults;
That we create our own "luck" by being responsible; and
Helps students understand why development of this character trait now will point them in the direction of success in later life.
This presentation has 12 slides and includes a link to a video of the book, "Horton Hatches the Egg", being read aloud with photos of the pages. The video runs approximately 10 minutes.
It also includes statistics that are current regarding the impact of bullying and why it is important that we all work together to stop bullying behaviors.
This is the worksheet for the lesson to help students participate in the lesson as well as help to reinforce the concepts that are taught.
I would schedule 30-45 minutes for this lesson and activity.
The PowerPoint is customizable and has a master slide that can be copied to make your own slides to personalize the lesson for your students and teaching style. The presentation includes both animations and transitions to hold your students' interest. Make your lesson come alive for your students and help them to connect to the concept in a fun way that will help them to remember the important lessons you need for them to remember.
