The first step in mastering CCSS RF.1.3c is being able to differentiate long from short vowel SOUNDS within words. This is especially challenging with ESL/ELL students.
I have developed a resource that has helped my students HEAR the difference between long and short vowel words while simultaneously expanding their English vocabulary.
Students are challenged to match cvc, cvce and common vowel team words to the corresponding picture to build English vocabulary. Next, students must say words aloud to differentiate between words with the long and short vowel sound through and complete a selective coloring activity (only coloring long vowel word pictures).
This activity can be administered both before and after introducing long vowel spelling patterns. Perfect for whole group guided discovery, small group work, independent work or assessment. It has been a huge success in my classroom and I hope it will be in yours too!
Spelling Patterns Included:
A- CVC, CVCe, ai, ay
E- CVC, CVCe, ea, ee, ey
I- CVC, CVCe, ie, igh
O- CVC, CVCe, oa, ow
U- CVC, CVCe, ue, ui
