This packet was created using the Gradual Release of Responsibility Framework! The Framework allows for students to work where they're at...assessing them before you teach, teacher modeling, differentiated collaborative group practice that is scaffolded according to their prior knowledge, independent practice and finally, a post assessment.
It is aligned to the Common Core Standard 2.2:
CCSS RI 2.2: Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
AND CCSS RI 2.3: Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text.
This lesson plan pack includes directions and prompts for mini-lessons and partner practice as well as ideas for collaborative activities. We have also included an integrated writing activity that corresponds to the reading standard. In this pack, we have integrated our Science standards to add even more meaning and purpose to our lessons.
*Note: This pack does not include the collaborative activity sheets- it is the slides for the mini-lessons and partner practice only. If you need the activity pack and pre/post assessments for this unit, you can find it here:

These lessons were designed for our high-performing second grade class but could be used for third grade due to the complexity of it.
***Note: This is a difficult standard for Second Graders. The strategies included in this lesson are meant to be taught over two weeks. If you would like ideas on how to extend these lessons to last for two weeks, we have another week of plans using these strategies with a science integration of life cycles of plants. You can find this pack here:
