This lesson introduces and teaches CCS RL 5.5 Explain how a series of stanzas fit together to provide the overall structure of a poem.
This lesson reviews what is a verse and a stanza. It then introduces the concept that verses are grouped into stanzas based on their purpose. The lesson introduces that the structure can emphasize the theme, and stanzas can increase or decrease in emotion or intensity. Students will identify the purpose of the stanzas in given poems, and then write a paragraph on how the stanzas contribute to the structure of the poem.
This product includes a PowerPoint presentation and 2 worksheets that allow students to engage and write during the lesson. Most slides contain sentence frames for pair sharing, academic discourse, and to assist ELLs during the lesson.
