RL.4.3 is a single standard that actually encompasses 3 different skills--students' understanding of settings, characters, and plot. I created separate worksheets to teach each skill (I call them Practice Pages) AS WELL AS a test for each skill. I pulled in the RL4.1 standard by writing questions that require students to use text evidence.
Every Practice Page and Test is multiple-choice. One of the questions is a multi-select question (it says so on the test), similar to what students might see on standardized tests. Each Practice Page has a notes section to teach the skill followed by 2 short passages and 10 questions. The "Settings" and "Characters" Test both have 5 passages and 12 questions each and the "Plot" Test has 5 passages and 14 questions. All Answer Keys are included.
I wrote the stories on the Practice Pages myself, but I used passages from Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn-Dixie for ALL of the Test questions. You DO NOT have to read the book aloud in order to use this resource. (I don't read it aloud to my students, but many choose it themselves after reading the passages on these tests!)
