This powerful PowerPoint presentation uses a familiar tale, “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” to help students understand theme. It models these processes: identifying the character's challenge, analyzing how he/she reacts to it, determining a theme, and writing a paragraph to express that theme.

The presentation opens with a definition and four steps for finding and writing a theme. It continues with thorough exploration of two separate themes for “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” Students learn to identifying characters’ challenges, translate responses to those challenges into a theme, and write a constructed response, including a topic sentence, detail sentences, and conclusion.
