Product Description

This is a mini thematic unit that is centered around the topic of the Dust Bowl and it requires students to read and analyze both fiction and non-fiction texts in order to to compare and contrast them at a rigorous level, but in an engaging way (RL 7.9).

This unit addresses the Common Core 7th grade literary standard, RL 7.9, which requires students to analyze fiction and non-fiction accounts of a period, or event in time and compare and contrast the texts.

The unit includes the following:

  • Links to all required resources and recommendations for additional supplemental resources.
  • 6 day lesson plan (based on ~60-65 minute class)
  • Link to online assessment that will require students to analyze, compare, and contrast the primary texts in an AIR-like (or PARCC-like) setting. Excellent summative assessment in order for students to show true mastery of the standard. (All questions were written based on AIR question recommendations and Ohio ProCore recommendations for the standard)
  • Engaging activities including poetic analysis (Dust Bowl themed poems): Example included.
  • Writing: Comparative analysis essay complete with prompt, guided writing form (for differentiation), and sample essay.

This unit is fun, super engaging, and easy to modify to fit your individual needs. I am certain you and your class will enjoy this unit!

Happy teaching!
