If your students are having a difficult time understanding why authors choose to use a given piece of figurative language instead of a bland phrase, this PowerPoint should help. It is aligned to CCSS RL and I 4, and is meant to reteach the thinking process for questions like: "Why did the author choose to say _________ instead of something like _______."
I created the PowerPoint so that you could edit it with the names of your students, add graphics, fonts, and change the independent practice at the end to fit your needs.
NOTE ON THE IP: After students do the writing activity, they switch with a partner. The partner changes each of the underlined phrases and replaces them with stronger choices. After they replace the stronger choices, they explain why they made their decisions using these stems: "I chose to use ________ instead of ________ because," "The phrase _________ is a stronger choice because the author meant to _________."
