Students will enjoy these two engaging rounding activities. Both activities encourage collaboration between classmates.
My students really enjoy the "rounding bags". This is an engaging activity where students have a handful of numbers and they walk around the room and drop their numbers into the correct bag each number would round to. When finished, partner students up and grab a "rounding bag". Partners will collaborate and analyze their bag to determine if the numbers inside the bag are correct or if they should be placed into a different bag. There are four levels: Rounding to the 10s place, Rounding to the 100s place, Rounding to the 1000s place and Rounding to the 10,000s place. There are 200 numbers for each level, so each of your students will have several numbers to round and place in the correct bag. You will need to have some brown lunch bags and you will need to write the correct rounded numbers on each bag, to go along with the correct level of rounding numbers.
ROUNDING TASK CARDS
32 Rounding Task Cards offer students an opportunity to discuss many different rounding problems including word problems, multiple choice (with more than one answer), some estimating or students will read one number and round it to the 10s, 100s, 1000s, or 10,000s place. There is an answer key provided if you use these in a math center. These task cards could be used whole group as a math warm-up, to SCOOT around the room, to complete with a partner, in small guided math groups or partner practice.
I hope your students enjoy these activities. They are both fun and students really do like the chance to get up and move while learning math.
