This is a chart that shows the steps of literacy. It is a great tool for Literacy Coaches to show new and experienced teachers how literacy develops in students. Following these steps will allow every student to be a fluent reader with good comprehension of the text.
I have used it at my school for professional development for new teacher and experienced teachers. It has a step by step visual format to allow teacher to have a mental image of how a student’s literacy builds. Without step 1, phonemic awareness, a student does not have the foundational skills to develop step 2, phonics. Without phonics/decoding skills a student will not build fluency and become a fluent reader. They will be sounding out every word. Finally without fluency a student will not build comprehension because he/she is focusing on reading word-to-word and cannot focus on comprehension. Vocabulary should be built into instruction in all the steps of literacy.
Teachers can place students at each step of the literacy to plan ways to support individual student during small group/guided reading or intervention time. My teachers LOVED the visual and really set the foundation for planning our RTI groups based on what each student need in literacy.
