The words are selected based on the Grade 1 Wonders Series, Unit 4 Week 2.
Being a special education teacher, I have ensured that this activity is designed for ALL learners: visual, kinesthetic, auditory, even unique learners such as students with dyslexia.
The font that is used (this font) is one that was designed for students with dyslexia, or students who may just have a tendency to reverse letters.
Each word has a specifically colored background to indicate the targeted skill:
Long a words- magenta
Long e words- green
Long i words- teal
Long u words- red
Short vowel words- blue
Additionally, letters have visual cues to support students as they are sounding out a word:
Consonants are black
Vowel sounds are red
Long vowel sounds have a line above them to indicate the long sound to students.
Silent letters are dark gray and smaller than other letters.
Print and laminate the following pages. Students slowly roll a toy car over each sound to blend each word.
After a student successfully blends the words on one sheet, he/she may then search for those words on his/her “I can read it” self-check sheet. I laminate this as well, so students may re-use it.
